I live in Seattle, WA (USA) and I am a singer/songwriter. I write and record everything myself in my own studio. I play all the instruments and do all the singing. The Hawaiian bit is that I decided to use my Hawaiian name musically after I “converted to Hawaiian” several years ago after my first visit to Hawai’i. Now, I have decided to give back doing what I can with what I have through music. It seemed to me that Hawaiian culture and philosophy fit my musical ideals and ambitions perfectly.
I am not Hawaiian by blood, but I am Hawaiian at heart. Kilika (other people know me as Chris) is my Hawaiian name. So, Kilika = Chris. Got it bruddah?
The music that I want to make is all about aloha and mana. Also, in Hawaiian music is kanikapila, in other cultures it is folk music…People’s music: Everyone can and should sing and make music! You do not have to be on American Idol to use and enjoy the gifts that God gave you. Life is music and rhythm! If your heart is beating, if you are breathing, then you have rhythm and music inside your body!
This is for everyone who is Hawaiian or who is a Hawaiian at heart (even if you might not realize it yet). It is about giving goodness to you through song. It is about being open to the goodness/mana that God has given us and passing it on to others to find its destiny. While Kilika’s music may not be purely Hawaiian in style, it is Hawaiian in spirit.
Mahalo nui loa!

Why do you have all this free music on this site?
For a couple of reasons really. As part of aloha and mana I want to be able to give to those who might benefit from my words or music and might not be able to afford to pay me. On the other hand, I want to support my stated goal of supporting myself financially from my music and my music won’t get played unless it gets heard. It won’t get heard unless it gets out there and it won’t get out there unless I give some away.
My current project on this site is called Musing Mana, in which I am producing a new song as often as possible and releasing it for free as a Podcast/Netcast for an entire year. Afterwards, I plan to offer all of these songs on CD format in their original order (and state of completion), and also at my online store, or from iTunes.
Can I use a song in my own song/movie/podcast/dance remix?
Sure. Since all of my music is released under an Attribution-NonCommercial Creative Commons license this means you can perform any kind of non-commercial re-use as long as you:
a. Credit me and link to this site, and
b. Do NOT use it to make money (this does not apply to songs with material that I do not own, such as cover songs). There is no need to ask permission, you are free to go make something. If you want to know more about Creative Commons, please visit the Creative Commons site.
Can I send a copy of a song to my friend or family?
Yes. See answer above about Creative Commons.
Currently recording is done via a DigiTech RPX400 (an awesome product they took off the market, but I ‘m glad I bought mine before that) with Cakewalk Sonar on a Windows XP system. I am however feeling led to convert from the Window/PC lifestyle to a Mac. It should only be a matter of time before I make the trek over to the Apple store and lay out some dough for a Mac and Logic Studio. I also use Sony Discrete Drums, Dimension Pro and a variety of other packages for digital percussion and other digital audio.
My studio (okay, my garage!) includes:
- Martin DC-16GTE acoustic electric guitar
- 1978 Ovation Balladeer (you too can look just like Glen Campbell)
- Ibanez cutaway classical guitar
- Godin SD electric guitar
- Fender Jazz 24 electric bass
- Rogue VB100 Violin Beatle Bass (a surprisingly awesome instrument for the price)
- Soprano Ukulele
- Gallien-Kruger Neo 112 Bass Amp and extra cab
- Carvin AG100D Acoustic Amp/Mini PA
- Yamaha PSR Keyboard
- A variety of Lee Oscar harmonicas
- Irish Pennywhistle
- AKG Perception 200 condensor microphone
- Behringer vocal mic (great mic for the price)
- More wires than I know what to do with
- A growing collection of guitar picks. I think they are colluding with the cables against me.
- A whole bunch of guitar instruction books that I probably never finished.
