Happy Mother’s Day!
I recorded this song very quickly – it was actually recorded in my garage, with me sitting on a stool in front of my workbench with a tape recorder! But, in spite of that, I liked it so much, I decided that I didn’t want to change a thing. This is one of the earliest songs that I have written, and as I remember it, the song came together very quickly, both the lyrics and the music. It was one of those things were I got the idea in my mind that I really needed to write a song about my mom.
My mom is living in a nursing home now, but when I wrote this song she was still living independently, but it was becoming obvious to all of us in the family that she was slipping and her dementia was getting worse. It really was the “long goodbye” and I cried a lot when I saw that the mom I had known my whole life was slowly slipping away from me and I would never be able to have the same kinds of conversations with her again. Before, we could talk about anything and laugh, now with dementia things are limited to short 1 or 2 minute conversations about the weather or TV and mostly just saying “I love you, mom.” And she says, “I love you.” Actually, that is more than enough, isn’t it?
My mom has always been my hero. This song is for you, mom. I love you. God bless you.
Happy Mother’s Day!
Here’s the song: Always There
Love,
Chris
